  • Katrina’s role means she gets to work alongside other green charities and organisations to influence positive environmental decisions

I am marketing manager for Ecotricity. For us, this means I manage our partnerships, campaigns and events to sell to our domestic audiences (i.e. for customer’s homes). Our partners can be charities, organisations and businesses that have green values. We set up advertising campaigns with these partners to help promote green energy and encourage people to switch their energy for the right reasons. Some of these campaigns are events where we sponsor a festival and our presence there will educate people on vegan energy.

My journey to this position began when I was working in hospitality. I found I really enjoyed the events side of this role and so I worked more in the event teams in hotels. After this, I decided to study the events in the music industry at Uni. I discovered uni wasn’t for me, it’s not for everyone, I prefer a practical learning style and learn better with a hands-on approach. I then took my next job in social media and sales for a company until I decided I wanted to work for a green company. This was when I got my foot in the door with Ecotricity by doing their social media. This was a way I could be creative and passionately talk about everything eco-friendly. I then used my accumulated skills from my previous roles and any upskilling opportunities I had taken to secure my current role as marketing manager.

I love that my job is very creative and that making advertising campaigns means we learn about different audiences- I enjoy the psychology element of this. I get to work with lots of fantastic partners and charities that I am passionate about. I work at very cool events and festivals where I meet like-minded people that share our enthusiasm. What I enjoy the most about working at the company is that I work with lots of enthusiastic and creative minds that are so passionate about the mission.

My role in the green mission is to influence action for positive environmental decisions. Everything we do is to encourage people to switch their energy to Britain's greenest energy company. Also, by working with partners with the shared interest of a greener Britain, we share their messages as well. So not only am I encouraging people to switch to green energy, but also inspiring people to make green lifestyle decisions by supporting our partners in their industries. We do lots of educational campaigns around all of our different green values: energy, food, transport and nature.

My advice for anyone beginning their career journey would be to find what your hobbies and passions are and then look for a job where it feels like you are being paid to do what you love. That encourages happiness in your day to day life. For me, I love going to events and I love being creative so this job ticks those boxes for me. When it comes to getting into the green industry, creating contacts is key. Do lots of volunteering with local charities and green sectors, find like minded events to attend and network with organisations there, joining groups like GenEarth is a really brilliant way of meeting like minded people. If you are interested in marketing, there are lots of different routes. Some people get marketing qualifications through Uni, or you can do online courses such as CIM (Chartered Institute for Marketing). But anywhere you can learn and get experience is going to help you on that path and pick up those skills.
