Challenge Mentor
YGBC Challenge Mentors meet regularly with student teams to help them implement their climate solutions in a feasible and impactful way. They support students to work as a team to maintain progress, unblock challenges, measure the impact of their solution, and offer guidance when needed.

Time Commitment
Duration: 1 to 3 hours per month during school hours

Location: In-person or virtually at schools across London & South East, Yorkshire, North West and North East England.

What is a Challenge
Mentor?
Over a four-month period, in a school setting (virtually or in-person) mentors work directly with teams of students to develop their ideas from concept through to prototype to implementation.
What skills are we looking for?
This role is ideal if you have had hands-on experience with managing projects, or turning ideas into action. A genuine passion for sustainability and entrepreneurship is important, and you should be ready to share practical tips for working together on initiatives. It’s important to be someone who’s responsible, resilient, and empathetic, with great communication skills to connect with all kinds of people. Building meaningful relationships is key, and we’d love for you to be a positive role model for students along the way.
What you’ll be doing: ​

Provide dedicated mentoring support to 1-2 student teams while they put their ideas into action

Offer guidance and constructive feedback, to help students build project planning, budgeting, and teamwork skills

Challenge students to think creatively and practically about their solution’s purpose and features

Support students to draft an End of Year Report and prepare presentation materials for the National Awards Event

Work alongside teachers to regularly monitor and record students’ progress while celebrating small wins along the way

Support teachers to maintain a positive environment for everyone
Other information:

Mentors will receive a full training, guidance and support before working with students

All activities will be supervised by teaching staff

All volunteers need to undergo a DBS Check - our team will support with this process
